I'm so sorry you had to go through the extra pain on top of what was already an awful situation.
I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I was raised by a strictly religious mother who had very strong views on things like leaving violent husbands and I think that slavish devotion to dogma can really obscure human kindness (ironically, the exact opposite of what God-fearing ought to be about).
My mum did in the end agree that I should leave my marriage, but for supporting me - as well as a few other minor incidents of ignoring their stringent rules - she was banished from her cult-like church.
It was the best thing that could have happened to her. I'm sure you don't regret losing the "support" of your church either, although it's horrible it happened that way.
